This is a unique Japanese decorative paddle called a hagoita. We found it at To-ji Temple’s antique market in Kyoto — a place where many beautiful and rare antiques are waiting to be discovered.
The design shows a bold kabuki lion character from the famous play Renjishi, a story about strength, family, and spirit. The face is three-dimensional, with soft white hair and red makeup to show strong emotion.
The clothing is made with rich silk and gold brocade, showing patterns like dragons and clouds. The back of the paddle has a hand-painted flower design.
In Japan, decorative hagoita are often used for New Year displays, believed to bring good luck and protection. This one is full of energy and drama — perfect for people who love Japanese culture, kabuki, or just want something bold and beautiful in their space.
It was likely made during the mid to late Showa period (1950s–1980s) and has been kept in good condition with only light signs of age.
🛍️ This is a one-of-a-kind item — once it’s gone, it’s gone.

⚠️ Condition
Some small signs of aging on the paddle and fabric, but the overall piece is well-preserved. The white hair is still full and dynamic.
